Last updated: October 1, 2026. This guide was rebuilt by category. We removed communities that are for discussion or product showcases rather than selling, and anything we couldn’t verify.
Reddit has no checkout, no escrow and no seller protection. What it has is hundreds of niche communities where people list things for sale under strict, community-written rules. The best Reddit marketplace subreddits are specialized: you won’t sell a graphics card on a watch forum, and you won’t get far there without following the posting rules to the letter.
This guide sorts the main buy, sell and trade subreddits by category, explains the rules you’ll run into, and covers what Reddit itself prohibits. Member counts are approximate figures from third-party snapshots that may be out of date, and every subreddit’s own sidebar and wiki are the final word.

The quick answer
- Match the product to a niche marketplace: hardware, keyboards, games, watches, audio gear and pens each have their own subreddit.
- Expect posting requirements: flair, a title format, a dated photo, and often a minimum account age or comment karma.
- Check the official list of goods Reddit prohibits before you post. Several marketplace communities have been shut down over it.
- Reddit is not a payment or protection system. Transactions are at your own risk.

What Reddit itself says about selling
Reddit’s help page on illegal or prohibited transactions, updated October 1, 2026, lists goods and services you may not buy, sell, gift or encourage transactions in. The list includes recreational drugs, alcohol, tobacco and vaping products, pharmaceutical drugs, firearms, ammunition, explosives and firearm parts, stolen goods, personal information, fraudulent goods such as falsified documents, and anything obtained through fraudulent or illegal access. It also says that if you arrange a permitted transaction, such as selling camping gear, you do so at your own risk.
That risk is real for communities too. In October 2025, Reddit moved to ban several gun-parts marketplaces after extending its policy to firearm parts, according to GunTab’s report. A subreddit you rely on can disappear if the policy changes.
Marketplace, deals or discussion?
Our earlier version of this article mixed three kinds of community. They aren’t interchangeable.
- Marketplaces let members list items they own. Examples are r/hardwareswap and r/GameSale.
- Deal-tracking communities share links to retailer sales. r/buildapcsales says on its FAQ wiki that it isn’t for person-to-person sales.
- Discussion communities are about selling, not for selling. r/Flipping has roughly 500,000 members, but its posting rules steer posts toward asking for or giving advice. It’s a place to learn resale tactics, not to list a product.
Some large communities also ban classifieds outright. r/MechanicalKeyboards, for example, says its rules prohibit buying, selling and trading posts, and sends that activity elsewhere.
Marketplace subreddits by category
Computer hardware and electronics
- r/hardwareswap (roughly 460,000 members): a marketplace to buy, sell and trade computer hardware. Listings typically name payment methods such as PayPal or local cash.
- r/HardwareSwapUK (about 26,000) and r/HardwareSwapEU: regional versions with their own rules. The UK community asks members to confirm trades in a companion rep subreddit to earn flair.
- r/thinkpadsforsale (about 14,000): a niche market for ThinkPads.
Keyboards
- r/mechmarket (around 300,000): buying, selling and trading anything keyboard-related, from keycaps to switches.
Gaming
- r/GameSale (around 150,000): a marketplace for console video games. Its description points trades to r/gameswap.
- r/gameswap (about 65,000): for swapping games, not selling them.
- r/BoardGameExchange (about 37,000): selling, trading and bartering tabletop games.
Watches
- r/Watchexchange (over 500,000): buy, sell and trade watches, from budget pieces to luxury models.
- r/watch_swap: a smaller alternative that requires a dated timestamp photo and a minimum account age.
Audio and video gear
- r/AVexchange (about 74,000): headphones, speakers, receivers, projectors and other audio and video equipment.
Pens and stationery
- r/Pen_Swap: a smaller community with firm posting requirements.
General and barter
The earlier version of this article also listed r/forsale and r/Barter. We couldn’t re-check their current rules and sizes for this update, so read their sidebars before posting.
Rules you’ll meet
Marketplace communities guard against scams with similar mechanics, though the thresholds differ. These examples come from publicly mirrored rule pages that may be out of date, so confirm them on each wiki.
| Common requirement | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| Minimum account age and karma | r/watch_swap asked for positive karma and a 30-day-old account. r/Pen_Swap asked for 100 comment karma and a three-month-old account. |
| Dated timestamp photo | r/watch_swap required a dated photo with the poster’s username, no more than 15 days old. |
| Title format and flair | Titles in r/hardwareswap-style communities follow a pattern with location, a have tag and a want tag, for example [US-CA] [H] item [W] PayPal. Flair is usually required. |
| Trade confirmation | r/HardwareSwapUK asks members to confirm trades in a rep subreddit to earn flair. |
Some communities stress that users who lack the karma or age can message the moderators to ask permission, and that gaming the thresholds with karma farming is treated as a violation. If you’re short on karma, our guide to subreddits to gain karma covers legitimate ways to earn it, and the Reddit account safety guide explains what gets accounts restricted.
How to post a first listing
- Read the sidebar and wiki. Rules differ even between sister communities.
- Check the minimums. Confirm your account’s age and comment karma meet them.
- Take the timestamp photo. Write the date and your username on a piece of paper next to the item, and include every item you list.
- Write a title in the required format, with location, have, want and price or payment method.
- Set the flair and post. Don’t repost aggressively, since many communities limit repost frequency.
- Reply promptly, and update the post when the item is sold.
Avoiding scams
- Check history. Look at the other user’s post history and any trade flair before you commit.
- Match the payment address. One community’s rules warn never to ship to an address that isn’t confirmed through the payment service.
- Be wary of pressure, unusual payment requests, or someone pushing the conversation into private messages for no reason.
- Report problems to the moderators instead of trying to enforce rules yourself. Several communities say that explicitly.
Reddit takes no responsibility for the outcome of these deals, as its own policy page makes clear. Use a payment method that offers buyer or seller protection, and understand its fees and limits before you agree.
If you sell digital products or services
Marketplace subreddits are built for physical goods and gear that can be photographed with a timestamp. They aren’t designed for promoting software, courses or services, and moderators remove anything that looks like advertising. For that goal, read our guide to promoting digital products on Reddit, and use Reddit for research first. Our piece on why Reddit is a goldmine for market research shows how to find your buyers before you pitch them.
FAQ
Is it allowed to sell things on Reddit?
Yes, for goods that aren’t prohibited, but Reddit says you do so at your own risk. The prohibited list covers items such as drugs, alcohol, tobacco, firearms and firearm parts, stolen goods, personal information and fraudulent goods.
Can I sell on Reddit with a new account?
Usually not in marketplace communities. Many set minimum account ages and comment karma, and some let you message the moderators to ask for an exception.
Which subreddit is best for selling a specific item?
The one built for that category: r/hardwareswap for PC parts, r/mechmarket for keyboards, r/GameSale for console games, r/Watchexchange for watches, and r/AVexchange for audio and video gear.
Are the member counts in this guide exact?
No. They’re approximate figures from third-party snapshots. Check the subreddit itself for current numbers and rules.
The short version
Pick the community built for your item, meet its requirements before you post, keep to Reddit’s list of prohibited goods, and treat every deal as your own risk. The rules are tedious, and that tedium is what keeps these communities usable.
